blogger's quilt festival - hand applique

AmysCreativeSide.com
This is my entry in Amy's Creative Side mega blogger quilt festival!
Thanks Amy for hosting!

This quilt is entered in the Applique Quilt Category. Voting begins May 24!

I am entering this extravaganza of a quilt that I have been working on for three years! It is a pattern from Kim McLean. This is 100% hand applique and hand quilted! All edge-turn applique with giant rick rack around the outside border. The fabrics are mostly Amy Butler and Kaffe Fassett.

These are definitely not my best photos! This thing is so huge I just can't figure out how to photograph it properly. Apologies. I hope you can see the amazing color in these fabrics and appreciate the stitching.

Also, I have to add that I think this quilt is the last of its genre for me! I started this several years ago and I love it. For 16 years I worked exclusively by hand. But now I have moved on to machine quilting and MUCH smaller quilts.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it. If you'd like to see more of this type of work, there is a wonderful blog called Glorious Applique that Kim McLean contributes to as well an many other quilters who are doing similar patterns.

Please leave me a comment below - it is so fun to hear from people.

  2. And yet more fabulous gorgeousness! This is my favorite colorway ever (BRIGHT) and once again your handwork looks beautiful. I think my favorite part is the striped cow!

    1. That striped cow was one of the first applique pieces I made for this quilt. It was just meant to be. It has been a long process - just gotta finish that binding and I will be done. Thanks for your comments and kind words Shannon!

  3. I love Kim McLeans patterns and admire anyone that takes one on. There is so much work involved, just picking the fabrics let alone appliquing all those little tricky shapes. I love the fun colours you have used and the zig zag border looks wonderful.

  14. Your Kim Mclean quilt is quite grande!! Happened upon your blog and am catching up on old post. Does this quilt have a label ??? it better and that label better give a few details besides Name, etc. Sorry to hear you are not going to do another glorious quilt. I have a half dozen of her patterns and yards and yards and yards of back ground fabric for when I begin, ha ha. You are to be commented to have finished!!!!!

    1. Dear Unknown. You are a "no reply" blogger, so I don't know if you will get my reply. Thanks for your comments! You are so right. This one must have a label. I have made a bunch of labels and never got around to attaching them. I will make sure to do this. Thanks so much for stopping by and for your comments!

  15. Absolutely! Appliqué embroidery digitizing has been a game-changer for my quilting projects. The level of detail and precision it adds is incredible. Plus, it's so much quicker than hand embroidery. If you haven't tried it yet, I highly recommend giving it a shot for your smaller quilts.
