Antique white quilts are not the white color we expect today, rather they are a natural, off-white color. And the best bet for keeping that color fresh was washing and a day or more in the hot sun which offered an easy and natural bleaching.

Before the 1870s, it was very difficult to dye or commercially print the color black on a cotton textile. Therefore, if black fabric was used in a quilt made before 1870, it is unlikely to have survived.
