my dog quilt, part three

And suddenly... a beautiful dog appeared on a bright lime green background.

One of the things I love most about doing applique work... is to me, the pieces of fabric are just pieces of fabric, nothing more... UNTIL they are sewn to their intended spot. Then suddenly the two pieces join and morph from just pieces of fabric to art.

Well, for the past several weeks this quilt top has been just a bunch of pieces. And now it has the beginnings of a piece of art. I am so thrilled.

Today's post is part three in my series! All of the hand applique (over 200 pieces!) is complete - except for the pupil in the eye.

Now that I have finished the hardest part, at least what I think will be the hardest part, I have pinned this on a board and set it across the room so I can get some distance and different perspective. I am studying all of the fabric choices and I already see several that need to change.  So I'll be spending the next week or so perfecting the individual pieces, ripping out some, and redoing a few.

Next step is to hand embroider the whiskers. And I might do a small bit of thread painting to add a few gray hairs in certain parts.

Then, eventually I will begin quilting it.  I can't wait. I'm not sure if I'll start this before Christmas... or let it sit. Probably won't be able to ignore it too long.

I'd love your thoughts and comments.

I am linking up with Freshly Pieced Wednesday WIP. And Friday with Nina Marie's Off the Wall Friday link up! Be sure to check out both of these blogs for lots of interesting art quilting.

  1. I know the maker always has their own idea of exactly how something should look, but I can't see anything that needs changing with this piece so far. I'm looking forward to seeing all the added little details.

    1. Hi Willit. Just a few places that need to blend better together to fix... then I will be all set. Thanks for your comments and for stopping by! I've had this one in my head for a long time, so I also can't wait to see it finished.

  2. This is just gorgeous Teresa! Just really outstanding. I love the touches of red/pink in the black dog. I think they really give some dimension. I'll be interested to see how he looks when you swap out the pieces you are talking about. I've done that on a few projects where everybody always said it looked fine as is but there were pieces that stuck out to me. At least it my opinion, listening to that niggling voice in my head saying it was wrong has been a good move!

    1. Yes... after staring at it for a while, I definitely need to change at least 3 pieces out. Just can't let it go. I will repost pics of the revised version before I start quilting it. Thanks again for your encouragement!

  3. I think it's beautiful--and I understand when you look at it for a while you start questioning certain fabric choices, but don't over-think it--stick with your gut feeling--it's fabulous!

  5. This is fantastic! I see David Taylor's influence ? Your work is just as good as his from what I can see and this is not easy to do - I have tried it after taking a class from him. I made two quilts but the process is so long BUT extremely gratifying when it's done right and you have. Are you using a peephole to view your fabric choices? I found that really helpful.

    1. Yes - I explained in my earlier posts that this was David Taylor influenced. I took a 4 day class with him. I really appreciate you saying this looks as good as his - that means a lot!! It is a long process, but I am doing it his way to see what results I can get. Also, instead of a reducing glass, I have discovered that a camera works great. Take a pic then sit back and look at it - image is reduced and contained. Works really well. Thanks again.
